My First Love
lf music be the
food of love, play on! - Shakespeare
My first love is music.
Surprised? What did you think that l was going to say? Oh, you actually thought l was going to say that my first love is Jane, Janet or Janice!

Not in this life! Maybe in the hereafter. But, right now,
my first love is music. It has always been music and music it always will be.
When l wrote the piece about
my love for computers, l was telling the gospel truth when l said "l now eat, drink, breathe and sleep with computers deeply entrenched in my blood stream".
But, l failed to mention that while flirting, romancing, cuddling or doing any such things which lovers do with my computer, there is always soft, soothing, beautiful music playing at the background. Now, can you beat that?
The Concept of Relativity
l believe that you like music. "Don't we all?" Did you ask? Well, that is a baseless generalisation with no foundation to stand upon.
Now, if l told you that there are some people who do not like music at all, would you believe it? To these category of human beings,
any form of music is an undesirable noise as far as they are concerned. So, they don't see what all the excitement and fuss is about. They just simply do not get it. Weird isn't it?
Well, that should not surprise you a teeny weeny lil bit because there are so many weird people in the world today. Weirdo is not something to be ashamed about any more in our secular society of today. Psychos and weird people even pride themselves on their psychotism. There is simply no proper standard of "right" and "wrong" any more.
So, one man's meat is definitely another man's poison. Thus, the concept of pleasure, excitement and happiness have become totally relative concepts nowadays to every Tom, Dick and Harry or Jane, Janet and Janice. Consequently, it is not what excites one man that excites another at the same level or even at all in our modern day society.
In the same vein, it is not what gives one man joy that gives another man joy - even if they are from the same mother's womb (l will expantiate further on this in my write-up titled
"the relativity of sadness and joy").

But, before l digress too far away from the topic at hand - my love for music - let me just chip in this line: you are
only as happy and fulfilled as your brain cells controlling your emotions are. Debatable, is it?
Love At First Sight
My love for music goes way back to the '80s when l had my first encounter with sweet, beautiful, melodious symphony commonly known as music. It was pure
love at first sight (or should l say sound?).
Then my "old man" bought a very expensive stereo deck, which has become quickly outdated and an antiquity nowadays. At that time, l would play the music player all day long and almost into the night which almost left my father feeling exasperated. He would even ask me if it was music l wanted to study in school or if l intended to become a musician.
My love for music continued through high school (secondary school) and, instead of abating, grew stronger by the passing day.
l finished school and there came a time of waiting for me to continue with my studies at a higher institution. So, l had more than enough idle time on my hands to play around with.
What did l do? Did l just sit on my butt playing around with my free time? No. l would sit by my radio set and listen to new music releases on the radio. Thereafter, l would visit a music recording studio (l believe that recording studios are a violation of copyright laws in some countries) in town and sit by the Disk Jockey with a paper and pen in hand.
l would present my carefully selected list to him and he would look at it. He would tell me of their new releases and patiently play one track after the other for me to hear free samples and add to my list. In the end, l would leave him with a robust list of carefully selected quality musical sound for him to tape-record for me. He would then assign a date for me to return for my finished audio recording.

l did at least one audio recording using a Maxelle tape every month out of my meager finance which came largely through monetary gifts from relations who came visiting during those days.
Eventually l had a musical library containing a vast array of musical collections ranging from the very best of classical, reggae, hip-hop, pop, rock n roll, rhythm and blues and even country music.
In order for you to comprehend how vast my collection was, l could play my music collections continuously for one whole calendar year non-stop. And
that my fellow music lover is no exaggeration!
An Usual Love
My love for music may be regarded as abnormal or unusual by some people or in certain quarters. However, if there is one singular thing which gives me joy and uplift my soul at the same time
on its own, it is good, beautiful, old-fashioned music.
Honestly, l must agree with those who see my love for music as very unusual. This is because l personally see it as bothering on obsession.
Whenever l am listening to good, beautiful music, my whole being is affected by the music. And when l listen to music, l actually
listen to the music. Thus, I not only feel the beat and rhythm of the music, l also listen to the lyrics as well and sing along as the music play on.
Thus, the combination of the strong emotional beat and rhythm of the music as well as its lyrics often have the combined effect of altering my mood. The feeling can be so strong and overpowering that l develop goose pimples all over as the music reach deep within my soul.
Hence, my mood can suddenly be uplifted by hearing a good rhyme as if injected with a mood-altering drug. And often times when l feel like having a good cry, l listen to a very good sentimental. It is not difficult for the tears to follow freely thereafter.

An example of this kind of song is R Kelly's "You Saved Me" and "Prayer Changes".
Some people may regard this behaviour as weird. Do you? Well, if you do, l do not begrudge you. You are entitled to hold your own opinion. But, that is just the way l am. And l cannot help being the way l am.
Now, you may be wondering what my kind of music really is. Quite frankly, l do not have a favourite when it comes to music. I love and appreciate
all kinds of good music. Just as long as the music is good, l must surely rock to it.
